Kapsali Beach

Chora Castle

In just 10 minutes driving distance we recommend visiting the Venetian Castle, located in Chora. It is the island' s most iconicmonument, built from the late 12th to early 13th centuries during the Venetian occupation. Its strategic position, offering views of the Ionian, Aegean, and Cretan Seas, earned it the nickname "The Eye of Crete." Mostly completed by the Venetians in 1503, the castle features prisons to the left of the entrance and a large cistern to the right. The center holds ruins of two-story houses where the conquerors lived. Inside, there are four churches. The oldest is the Church of Pantokrator, built in 1545 with ancient frescoes. The largest is Panagia Myrtidiotissa, built in 1580, originally Catholic and converted to Orthodox in 1806. This church protected the city from pirate invasions with its miracle-working icon of Myrtidiotissa for nearly two centuries.
